Election Regulations

The following regulations were defined by the section board at its July meeting:

Eligible Positions
The following positions will be eligible for election on October 18, 2016:
  • Access & Environment
  • Safety
  • Volunteer Coordinator
  • Chair
  • Vice-Chair
Moving forward, the election of positions will be split 50/50:

Even Years:
  • Access & Environment
  • Safety
  • Volunteer Coordinator
  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
Odd Years
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Social
  • Fun, Urban Based Alpine Replication
  • Communications & Membership

General Election Terms:
  • All board members will be elected for a two year term.
  • If a board member chooses to resign after less than two years of service, their position will be filled in the next election.  In the meantime, the board may appoint a person to act in the resignee’s place.
  • All eligible positions will be advertised, and the nomination committee will solicit volunteers with the pertinent skills to run in the election.
Nomination Committee

The nomination committee has the following roles:
  • All eligible positions will be advertised, and the nomination committee solicit volunteers with the pertinent skills to run in the election.
  • Provides clear job descriptions to the entire membership of the section.
  • Effectively communicates with the entire membership of the section to encourage volunteers to come forward.
  • Targets candidates having traits that are deemed desirable by the committee for each open position.
  • Verifies candidate eligibility for the elections, and provides the list to the membership of the section.
  • Does not endorse or otherwise provide its own opinion on the ideal candidate for a given position.

The nomination committee will be composed of:
  • An experienced member of the section (not on the current executive and not running in the current election).
  • At least two members of the section, qualified to vote, who are not running in the current election.

Voter & Candidate Eligibility

To be eligible to vote, a member must be
  • A member of the ACC
  • Affiliated with the Edmonton Section
To be eligible, the candidate must be:
  • Member of the ACC
  • Affiliated with the Edmonton Section
  • Be seconded by at least one eligible voting member (not including members of the nominating committee)

Timeline
  • At the September 20th general meeting of the Section, all members will be informed of the candidates in the election and each candidate will have an opportunity to speak to the membership.
  • The election will occur on the 18th of October.  Two weeks prior to the general meeting, on October the 4th, voting will open.  Voting will close at the general meeting.
  • Voting will take place online.  A means of voting in person at the October general meeting will be provided for any members.
  • The nominating committee chair will scrutinise the  election.  This includes fair and even allocation of the floor to each candidate.
  • Candidates may provide a statement, not to exceed 500 words which will be published by email in The Breeze.  Publication will occur immediately after the September general meeting.
  • There will be no limit on the number of candidates for a given position.  That being said, in the case of a large number of candidates expressing interest in one specific position, the nomination committee may encourage some of those candidates to run for alternative positions.
  • The committee will engage actively with membership (via frequent communication with members) in order to encourage all skilled candidates to come forward.
